- Quick word from our partners at WISE before we get into it. If buying a home in Japan is anywhere on your radar, grab the WISE app.
Same goes if you just travel a lot. It takes two minutes to set up, and you’ll wonder why you didn’t do it sooner.
WISE makes converting dollars into yen (or any other currency) painless, with real exchange rates and fees you can actually see upfront.
No surprises buried in the fine print - When you’re wiring a down payment halfway around the world, you want to know exactly where every dollar is going. That’s why WISE is the only service I use for it. -
We get asked this question all the time by friends, potential business partners, pretty much everyone. It’s a standard question for any business: who is your demographic?
And honestly… after doing this for 2 years, there isn’t really a clean answer.
On Instagram, sure, it’s mostly mid-20s to mid-40s, majority male, action sports–focused. That part is easy.
But our actual clients? The people who sign up with us, the people we’ve helped find homes in Japan? It’s all over the place. Completely diverse. Almost random.
Americans, Australians, Canadians, Europeans (who speak English), Mexicans (who speak English), those are the main groups. Our content naturally reaches people who consume media in English, so that’s really the only consistent filter.
But beyond that? There’s not much tying everyone together.
25, 45, 60.
Male, female.
Rich, middle class.
Snowboarders, Japan lovers, frequent travelers.
You’d think buying a home in Japan would be a rich person’s game but I’d actually say the opposite. Most of our clients? This is their first home purchase.
The one real through line, the one thing almost all of our clients share, is this:
They’re adventurous. They’re risk-takers.
Now, I’ve been in this long enough to know it’s not really a risk. The world is small in 2026. Owning a home halfway across the world isn’t that crazy… or maybe it is, and I’m just too deep in it to see it anymore.
But what I mean is, it’s not risky in the way people think. You’re not dealing with 100-year leases or weird ownership structures like in some countries. Japan is open. You own the house. You own the land. It’s yours. No one can take it from you.
Still… when I bought my first place, it felt like a massive risk.
And that feeling, that willingness to do something that other people think is crazy, that’s something I’ve always been comfortable with.
I did my research. I knew what I was doing made sense. But when everyone around you thinks it’s a terrible idea, that noise starts to creep in. It chips away at your confidence, even when you know better.
Side note, this actually happened a few weeks ago:
I was at a bar, and someone asked what I do. I told him, “It’s kind of random, but I help people buy homes in Japan.”
He literally couldn’t process it. Thought I was scamming people. Told me I should probably lawyer up because there’s no way I’m actually helping people become real homeowners.
So yeah… maybe this is crazier than it feels sometimes.

But that brings me back to the point:
Our clients are adventure-seekers. Risk-takers. People who don’t just follow the traditional path because that’s what they’re “supposed” to do.
And honestly, I think that’s pretty awesome.
I guess we built a company and marketed it to people just like us.
Which is why every call I get on feels natural. I have so much in common with the people we work with.
