I love talking to strangers, at coffee shops, on planes, at bars, anywhere really. And if the conversation naturally drifts toward real estate, (maybe i steer it that lol) I can’t help but bring up what I do.

I help people buy homes in Japan. It’s something I’m proud of, excited about, and honestly still amazed by myself.

When I tell people I bought a house for $26,000 USD, just minutes from the snowiest ski resort on Earth, the reaction is always the same, a mix of disbelief and curiosity. “There’s no way that’s real,” they’ll say. Then I pull out my phone, show them our website, our Instagram, our search engine, and client testimonials and only then do they start to believe me.

But it’s all true. Homes really are that affordable in Japan. And not just crumbling akiya deep in the mountains, we’re talking well-maintained homes in safe neighborhoods, often walking distance to train stations, convenience stores like 7-Eleven or Lawson, and full of character.

Most Westerners, myself included, grew up in housing markets that only move in one direction: up. From France to the U.S., Millennials have been priced out of homeownership. I genuinely believe a lot of the frustration we see in Western politics comes down to this, the simple fact that life in our own countries has become too expensive to live. Whether that’s due to politics, boomers, NIMBYs, or some mix of all three… that’s a debate for another day.

So when people hear that you can buy a livable, legal, fully titled home in a futuristic country like Japan for less than the price of a used car, their minds are blown.

(And is Japan really that futuristic? That’s another fun conversation — because in some ways, yes, and in others, it’s still stuck in the late 1980s.)

But the bottom line is: this is real, attainable, and happening right now.
